The work of art that hangs from the ceiling is a tribute to the resilience of species across the globe that are endangered or are in the process of going extinct. Artist Daniel Otero Torres questions the impact of systems of consumption or of exploitation of the planet’s forests or wetlands. Installed on a circular metal structure, these animals, which constitute a zoo at the heart of the hotel, observe us. The crayon drawings and flat paintings are folded to give them volume while the polished stainless-steel mirror situates our reflection within the work. This metatheatre invites us to think about our own role in the protections of these species. Certain animals – the jaguar, the Andes condor or the quetzal – stand out: these are species that are especially important in the cultures of the artist’s native Latin America that predate the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
